Some time in, but still learning.
"If you're not getting older, you're dead."
-Tom Petty
There is an old saying that says "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." I've always had beef with this phrase. I realize that it's hard to learn how to do something new, especially if you've done something the same way for years/decades. This saying is somewhat offensive to the 96 year old man who graduated college, Julia Child who published her first first cookbook at 49 or Bram Stoker who became famous after 50.
When I was younger, I believed that you needed to know what you wanted to "do with your life" and that you needed to know this before you were 18. (laughs to self) How preposterous! (I've always wanted to say that phrase.) I learned the harsh lesson, when I was entering college that this was crazy. In my humble opinion, there are few people who actually know what they will do with their life when they become an adult. I went to college wanting to be a photographer and, 14 years later, ended up a teacher.
Time shows us who and what we are. Life gives us lemons and cake...sometimes on the same plate. The world shows us how different we are and how much alike we actually are. We earn scars, cuts, spots, gray, aches, groans, cracks and experience. Our life is the line on our headstone, betwixt our birth and death years.
Young (and some older) people need to realize that you don't need to live a perfect life or have all the answers, to be who you are. Do any of us really achieve perfection? Do what you enjoy, respect those around you and don't cause grief. Learn all that you can handle. Keep your brain open (I originally typed brian) and adapt. Become who you are supposed to be.
